US Intelligence Launches Investigation into Overseas Biological Laboratories

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) has initiated a comprehensive investigation into more than 120 US-funded biological laboratories located abroad. DNI Tulsi Gabbard announced that her team aims to identify specific laboratory locations, the pathogens involved, and the nature of ongoing research. The primary objective of this probe is to halt dangerous gain-of-function experiments that pose significant threats to global health and safety. This action highlights growing concerns within the US intelligence community regarding biosafety and security risks associated with these facilities. Reports indicate that the United States operates over 300 such biological laboratories internationally, with more than 40 situated in Ukraine. The investigation signals a potential shift in oversight mechanisms for overseas biological research programs, emphasizing the need to mitigate risks linked to high-containment pathogen studies.
