Hoover’s TPA, Stanford’s HAI Jointly Fund Three New Projects Studying AI and Geopolitics
Hoover Institution's Technology Policy Accelerator (TPA) and Stanford's Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) are jointly funding three new research projects exploring how AI impacts geopolitical challenges. Each project receives up to $100,000 and involves interdisciplinary teams combining humanities/social sciences with technical fields. The projects focus on: 1) Human-Centered AI for Proliferation Monitoring, studying AI systems to detect nuclear proliferation using open-source data; 2) Public Opinion about AI and Geopolitics in the US and China, using an AI-powered survey tool to compare citizen views; and 3) Political Agents, examining Chinese and US foundation models in agent-mediated political tasks. The partnership began in early 2026 with a Working Group on AI and Geopolitics aimed at developing orienting principles and funding novel research on national security, economic, and policy impacts of AI.
