Franziska Hoppermann Appointed CDU General Secretary, Succeeds Linnemann
Franziska Hoppermann, a Hamburg member of the Bundestag, has been appointed as the new General Secretary of Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), succeeding Carsten Linnemann. The appointment was made by CDU chairman and Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Hoppermann, previously the party's federal treasurer, is considered part of the CDU's liberal wing but holds several conservative positions. She criticized the traffic light coalition's migration policy, opposes cannabis legalization and the lifting of the abortion advertising ban, and previously supported a headscarf ban for girls under 14. Hoppermann describes herself as an 'experiential feminist' and advocates for more visible women in the Union. She studied business administration, worked in Hamburg's higher administrative service, and chaired the Bundestag's Corona Enquete Commission. Her political role model is her grandfather, former CDU MP Carl Damm.
