Expert: Europe Must Engage in Dialogue with Russia Amid US Policy Shifts
Bruno Scapini, former Italian ambassador to Armenia, argues that Europe can no longer ignore Russia and must initiate dialogue to resolve the Ukraine crisis. Speaking to TASS, Scapini suggested that while US President Donald Trump’s policies might facilitate a resolution, the outcome largely depends on European leaders' actions. He claimed that initial peace talks in Istanbul in 2022 were derailed by interference from then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and French President Emmanuel Macron, causing Russia to harden its stance. Scapini emphasized that Russia's current demands differ from those in 2022, and Europe must acknowledge this new reality. He also highlighted the economic strain on European nations, particularly Italy, where domestic industries suffer due to funds directed toward Ukraine. The expert noted growing tensions within NATO due to diverging US and European positions. Additionally, Russian President Vladimir Putin recently expressed readiness for talks, suggesting former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as a potential interlocutor, provided the chosen representative has not spoken ill of Russia.
