Eurovision Director Welcomes Canada to Join Song Contest
Martin Green, the director of the Eurovision Song Contest, has stated that Canada is welcome to join the competition if it wishes to apply. This announcement follows revelations in Canada’s 2025 federal budget that the government intended to explore participation in the contest. Green noted that while no formal application has been submitted yet, the organization is open to countries that share its values. Although the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) is only an associate member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), it is eligible to participate, similar to Australia. However, experts caution that Canada must present a strong business case to the EBU, as previous attempts were halted due to high costs. The CBC has currently sent observers to the 2026 contest in Vienna. This potential entry highlights Canada's desire to showcase its artistic identity globally, despite not being a European nation.
