Eurovision Director Open to Canada Joining Song Contest

Martin Green, the director of the Eurovision Song Contest, has stated that the competition is open to new participants from outside Europe, including Canada. In an interview with the BBC, Green noted that while no formal request has yet been received from Canadian authorities, the organization welcomes any nation willing to share its values. This development follows indications from the Canadian federal government, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, that it is exploring participation in the contest as part of a broader strategy to diversify cultural and political ties with Europe. The previous year's federal budget included provisions for the CBC to investigate potential involvement. Although Canada is currently only an associate member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), it could join if formally invited, similar to non-European participants like Australia and Israel. CBC/Radio-Canada confirmed that staff members are attending the current contest in Vienna as observers to facilitate ongoing discussions with the EBU regarding future collaboration and potential entry into the globally watched musical event.
