Ethiopian marathon runner Yebrgual Melese has tragically died at the age of 36 after suffering a sudden medical emergency during a training session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The incident occurred as she was preparing for the upcoming Ottawa Marathon in Canada, where she was considered a top contender for victory. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, medical personnel were unable to revive her. The Ethiopian Athletics Federation issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of the heroic athlete and offered condolences to her family, friends, and fans. Melese was a highly decorated runner, having won the Shanghai International Marathon in 2018 and 2019, as well as the Houston and Prague Marathons in 2015. She also achieved second-place finishes in the Boston and Chicago Marathons in 2015. Her personal best time of 2:19:33 was recorded in Dubai in 2018. Known for her strong finishing kicks in the final 10 kilometers, Melese was a respected figure in the elite running community. She is survived by her husband and two children.
