East African Nations Plan Joint Regional Satellite Launch

Ministers from Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda have agreed to advance the Northern Corridor Regional Communication and Broadcasting Satellite Initiative (NCRCBSI). This collaborative effort aims to develop a sovereign satellite to enhance communication, broadcasting, and digital access across the region while reducing reliance on foreign infrastructure. During the Connected Africa Summit in Nairobi, officials committed to jointly funding a comprehensive feasibility study, which is expected to take 12 to 18 months to complete. Although the specific launch timeline remains uncertain, the project marks a significant shift from preparation to implementation for these East African states. Currently, Africa has launched only around 65 satellites, mostly for earth observation, lagging significantly behind global leaders like the US. If successful, the satellite will likely be launched from commercial facilities outside the continent, such as in Kazakhstan or South America, due to the lack of operational spaceports in Africa. The initiative underscores growing regional cooperation to strengthen digital infrastructure, improve service delivery, and drive economic growth through enhanced connectivity in under-served areas.
