Canadian Submarine Sinks Decommissioned US Cruiser in RIMPAC 2026 Exercise
The decommissioned US Navy guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay was sunk during a live-fire sinking exercise (SINKEX) at RIMPAC 2026 in the Pacific on July 12, 2026. The decisive strike was delivered by a Mk 48 heavyweight torpedo fired from the Royal Canadian Navy Victoria-class submarine HMCS Corner Brook, marking the first participation of a Canadian submarine in RIMPAC since 2014. The exercise also involved coalition forces using HIMARS rockets, anti-ship missiles (Type 12, LRASM, Spike), and Apache helicopters. A second target, the decommissioned amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu, was sunk on July 17. Both ships were sunk in waters approximately 15,000 feet deep off Kauai. The SINKEX provided crews with realistic target practice and engineering data on ship damage. USS Mobile Bay served from 1987 to 2023, participating in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Iraqi Freedom. RIMPAC 2026 involved 31 nations, 36 surface ships, five submarines, and 25,000 personnel.
