Berlin-Grünau Yacht Club Celebrates 50 Years Since Olympic Gold
The Yachtclub Berlin-Grünau celebrated the 50th anniversary of its first Olympic medals with a summer festival on the Spree in Friedrichshagen. Over 100 club members and guests gathered at the club grounds on Müggelseedamm, which have been in use since 1902. The celebration commemorated the 1976 Montreal Olympics, where 22-year-old Jochen Schümann won gold in the Finn Dinghy, and Dieter Below, Michael Zachries, and Olaf Engelhardt won bronze in the Soling. The club provided all athletes, coaches, and support staff for GDR sailors that year. Three-time Olympic champion Schümann traveled from Bavaria to his home in Köpenick for the event. He highlighted the contributions of not just winners but also those who worked in workshops, physiotherapy, kitchens, and as training partners. To date, the club boasts 5 Olympic and 3 Paralympic medals, with Grünau sailors achieving 227 podium finishes at World Championships, European Championships, and Olympics since 1956.
