Berlin's biggest Olympic party took place on the Spree in Friedrichshagen. The local Yacht Club Berlin-Grünau (until 1995 the sailing division of SC Berlin-Grünau) celebrated the 50th anniversary of its first Olympic medals on Saturday.
In 1976 at the Olympic Games in Montreal, the then 22-year-old Jochen Schümann (72) won gold in the Finn Dinghy (single-handed sailing boat). Additionally, Dieter Below (84), Michael Zachries (77/deceased 2021), and Olaf Engelhardt (75) won bronze in the Soling. In 1976, the club provided all the athletes, coaches, and support staff for the GDR sailors.
