According to a report from China Industrial News, the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) released August operational data showing continued steel output contraction, with crude steel production at 74.61 million tons, down 3.7% year-on-year. For the first eight months, total crude steel output fell 3.1% to 652 million tons. CISA officials stated this reflects the industry's active structural adjustment and efficiency stabilization. High-end manufacturing now accounts for 52% of steel use, surpassing construction. The article highlights breakthroughs in specialty steels, including 0.1mm electrical steel for EVs and humanoid robots, cryogenic Invar alloy for ships, and ultra-thin 'Cicada Wing' steel (0.07mm) for 5G applications. CISA President Liu Jian noted that during the '14th Five-Year Plan' period, the industry cumulatively cut over 100 million tons of capacity, increasing industrial concentration. Vice President Jiang Wei reported that ultra-low emission upgrades now cover over 90% of crude steel capacity, with total investment exceeding 370 billion yuan. The industry is also advancing hydrogen-based direct reduction and other low-carbon metallurgy demonstration projects.

The China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) recently released operational data for the steel industry in August, indicating a continued contraction in steel output as the sector aligns with high-quality development guidelines.
Production Data
In August, China's crude steel output reached 74.61 million tonnes, down 3.7% year-on-year and declining month-on-month. Production of pig iron and steel products also decreased, reflecting the ongoing effectiveness of proactive output control measures.
During the first eight months of this year, China's cumulative crude steel production totaled 652 million tonnes, a decrease of 3.1% year-on-year.
High-End Manufacturing Drives Quality Transformation
According to CISA, the decline in steel output reflects the industry's proactive efforts to adjust its structure and stabilize profitability. Currently, the proportion of steel used in manufacturing has surpassed that used in construction, with a significant increase in the share of high-value-added steel products.
This year, China has deployed several high-end steel products to support advanced manufacturing:
- 0.1mm-grade electrical steel used in new energy vehicles and humanoid robots
- Invar steel for the shipbuilding sector, overcoming ultra-low-temperature technology and breaking foreign monopolies
- "Extreme Steel" (Jijingang) from TISCO, used in molds for composite material forming in the new domestically produced large passenger aircraft
- "Cicada Wing Steel" (Chanyigang), also known as 5G steel, with a minimum thickness of just 0.07 mm, combining high strength and high ductility, reaching global advanced levels in precision steel
At the 15th China International Steel Congress held in Shanghai, CISA stated that the upgrading of high-end manufacturing is accelerating the quality transformation of China's steel industry, with material self-sufficiency becoming a key factor in industrial chain coordination.
Currently, China's steel self-sufficiency rate has essentially reached 100%, and the share of steel used in manufacturing has risen to 52%, surpassing that used in construction.
Liu Jian, President of CISA, noted: "During the '14th Five-Year Plan' period, China's steel industry has cumulatively reduced production by over 100 million tonnes, and industrial concentration has continued to increase."
Ultra-Low Emission Transformation Covers Over 90% of Crude Steel Capacity
CISA reported that the steel industry's ultra-low emission transformation now covers more than 90% of crude steel production capacity, with low-carbon metallurgy driving the upgrade of high-end, green, and low-carbon steel products.
China has invested a total of over 370 billion yuan in ultra-low emission transformation for the steel industry. Additionally:
- An industry-wide EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) platform has been established and put into operation
- Multiple batches of low-carbon emission steel products have been released
- Supporting technical systems for the carbon market have been improved
- The hardware and software foundation for low-carbon transformation continues to be strengthened
Jiang Wei, Vice President and Secretary-General of CISA, stated: "At present, the ultra-low emission transformation projects in the steel industry have been largely completed, with over 90% of crude steel capacity achieving ultra-low emissions. At the same time, the industry is actively implementing benchmarking actions for extreme energy efficiency. Many steel enterprises have significantly reduced energy consumption in their production processes. Furthermore, a number of low-carbon metallurgy demonstration projects, such as hydrogen-based shaft furnace near-zero-carbon factories, have been successively completed and put into operation."
