Anthropic launches cost-efficient Claude Opus 5.5 AI model; IPO expected as early as this fall

Anthropic PBC has released a new artificial intelligence model designed to handle a broad range of enterprise tasks at a lower cost. The move comes as the startup prepares for a highly anticipated Wall Street debut and seeks to maintain its competitive edge.

On Tuesday, the company officially launched Claude Opus 5.5, stating that the model performs comparably to the more powerful Fable 5.1 across most work-related tasks, while significantly reducing usage costs compared to the previous Opus 5 version. Anthropic noted that the new model generates outputs faster than Opus 5 and produces clearer writing.

Expanding the 5.5 Model Family

The AI developer plans to release new versions of Claude Sonnet and Haiku in the coming weeks, expanding its 5.5 series model lineup.

Competitive Landscape and IPO Plans

Anthropic is accelerating development of more advanced and cost-efficient AI software as it competes for customers with OpenAI, Alphabet's Google, and numerous Chinese companies. The Claude developer is expected to launch its initial public offering (IPO) as early as this fall, while rival OpenAI is reportedly targeting next year.

Safety and Security Measures

Opus 5.5 is the first new model released since Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for the industry to support a slowdown in AI development. He stated that the company will implement new safety measures, including the introduction of third-party evaluators. This follows growing warnings from within and outside Silicon Valley about the potential catastrophic risks of AI.

Anthropic confirmed that Opus 5.5 was tested by external organizations such as METR and Frontier Design prior to release. The company has also deployed safety guardrails similar to those used in its more powerful Fable model, aimed at limiting high-risk applications in cybersecurity and biology.
