Nearly a year after a geopolitical split severed its European wafer supply, Nexperia China has rebuilt its manufacturing chain by shifting production to a domestic 12-inch wafer platform, according to a report by Time Weekly. In September 2025, Dutch authorities restricted Wingtech's control over Nexperia's Dutch entity, cutting off approximately 59,000 8-inch equivalent wafers per month from its Hamburg and Manchester fabs. Nexperia China responded by partnering with a Chinese strategic partner's 12-inch wafer fab, which currently produces 36,000 wafers per month (equivalent to 81,000 8-inch wafers) and plans to reach 50,000 by end of 2026. The company has launched new products including T2X series MOSFETs and 8th-gen FS8 IGBTs on the 12-inch platform, and has over 1,300 logic chip part numbers in mass production. While automotive remains its core business, the company is targeting growth in AI data center power management and new energy vehicles. Transistor supply is expected to normalize by the second half of 2026.

Nearly one year after the "split" of Nexperia, the first thing to be rewritten was not equity, but a single wafer.
The Old Global Supply Chain
Historically, Nexperia's production chain was a cross-border assembly: European wafer fabs handled front-end manufacturing, while China, Malaysia, and the Philippines handled packaging and testing. Specifically:
- Hamburg, Germany and Manchester, UK wafer fabs had a combined monthly capacity of approximately 59,000 8-inch equivalent wafers
- Nexperia's Dongguan, China factory handled approximately 70% of global packaging and testing capacity
This system operated for years until it was abruptly severed in the second half of 2025.
The Disruption
In late September 2025, the Dutch government and local courts imposed measures on Nexperia Semiconductor citing national security concerns, restricting Wingtech Technology's control over Nexperia Netherlands. This effectively split Nexperia entities between China and the Netherlands, dismantling the previously highly coordinated global supply chain.
For Nexperia China, the most immediate impact came from wafer supply: without overseas wafers, its packaging and testing capacity risked having no chips to package.
Rebuilding Manufacturing
Over the past year, Nexperia China has undertaken what can be described as a "rebuilding" of its manufacturing system. Rather than waiting for the original supply chain to recover, the company began:
- Sourcing wafer capacity within China
- Gradually migrating certain 6-inch and 8-inch products previously dependent on Europe to 12-inch platforms
- Continuing to expand domestic packaging and testing capabilities
According to sources close to Nexperia China, "After the overseas wafer supply channel was disrupted, Nexperia China concentrated on developing transistor wafer alternatives starting in Q4 2025. By the end of Q1 2026, cooperation was reached with a Chinese strategic partner, successfully completing the introduction of a 12-inch wafer process platform, while simultaneously advancing new product validation and mass production."
As of August this year, Nexperia China has launched:
- T2X series low-voltage MOSFETs
- 8th generation FS8 IGBTs
- 12-inch bipolar diodes and transistors (R&D and mass production)
- Over 1,300 mass-produced logic chip part numbers on the 12-inch platform
The 12-Inch Wafer Platform Solution
The former Nexperia was a typical global semiconductor company. Wafers were manufactured in Europe, then shipped to China, Malaysia, and the Philippines for packaging and testing, before reaching automotive, consumer electronics, and industrial markets.
Legacy European fabs:
- Hamburg (est. 1953): >35,000 wafers/month (8-inch equivalent)
- Manchester: ~24,000 wafers/month (8-inch equivalent), primarily 6-inch TrenchMOS
- Combined: ~59,000 wafers/month (8-inch equivalent)
New Chinese partner fab:
- First 12-inch automotive-grade power semiconductor wafer fab
- Current capacity: ~36,000 wafers/month (equivalent to ~81,000 8-inch wafers)
- Capacity utilization: >100%
- Target by end of 2026: 50,000 wafers/month
While some industry observers initially questioned whether 12-inch wafers were "overkill" for mature products like diodes, transistors, MOSFETs, and IGBTs, the platform offers advantages beyond just larger size:
- Effective area: 12-inch wafers have approximately 2.25x the area of 8-inch wafers, enabling more chips per wafer and lower unit costs through economies of scale
- Full automation: Reduces human-induced variation, enabling tighter control over critical process dimensions
- Product consistency: Lower electrical parameter dispersion and better batch-to-batch consistency
- Yield stability: Automated production combined with stricter cleanroom management and defect control
These benefits are particularly valuable for automotive and industrial markets requiring high reliability and consistency.
Beyond the Core Business
For Nexperia China, the 12-inch wafer platform from its strategic partner addresses more than just wafer supply. It provides an opportunity to rebuild scaled manufacturing capabilities for mature power devices, logic devices, and bipolar discrete components at lower unit costs and more stable yields.
Product updates (August this year):
- Power devices: T2X series low-voltage MOSFETs, 8th generation FS8 IGBTs
- Bipolar discrete devices: 12-inch wafer bipolar diodes and transistors (R&D and mass production)
- Logic chips: Over 1,300 mass-produced part numbers covering consumer electronics, industrial, automotive, and AI applications
This represents Nexperia China's most critical achievement over the past year: reconnecting manufacturing capabilities disrupted by supply chain adjustments.
Supply Recovery Timeline
According to sources close to Nexperia China, MOSFET, logic, and analog IC product delivery continuity has gradually improved as supply chain optimization progresses. Transistor product supply is expected to return to normal levels in the second half of 2026.
Meanwhile, new products are accelerating into customer validation. Multiple medium- and low-voltage MOSFETs, IGBTs, and transistor products have been prepared and sampled, primarily targeting AI data centers (AIDC) and new energy vehicles.
Automotive: The Core Business
Automotive remains Nexperia China's most important foundation:
- Over 90% of semiconductor products meet automotive-grade standards
- Dongguan packaging and testing factory holds full automotive industry quality system certifications
- Products meet OEM and Tier 1 supplier requirements for reliability, lifespan, and environmental tolerance
- Automotive power devices represent the core revenue base
Growth drivers in automotive:
- Rising new energy vehicle penetration
- Advanced intelligent driving普及
- Increasing electronification of traditional fuel vehicles
All these trends are raising semiconductor content per vehicle, providing incremental growth space beyond the existing customer base.
AI: A New Growth Frontier
While AI data centers appear to be a GPU computing power race, at the foundation it is a competition in power and power management. High-voltage grid power cannot directly enter GPUs; it must undergo transformation, rectification, and voltage regulation to become usable low-voltage power. Higher computing density means higher power consumption and greater importance of power systems.
Nexperia China's MOSFETs and protection devices are entering AI servers and AI PCs along this power chain. The company's strength lies not in AI chips themselves, but in "powering" these AI chips. As AI server power consumption continues to rise, power conversion efficiency has evolved from a background parameter to an integral part of computing infrastructure, creating new demand for power semiconductors.
Summary
For Nexperia China:
- The 12-inch wafer platform solves manufacturing-side challenges
- The automotive-grade market secures the core business
- AI server and other scenarios will determine how far this domestic manufacturing system can go
