On 28 August 2026, the United States announced new sanctions targeting the manager of the Dubai branch of Iran's Bank Melli and a Hong Kong-based company for helping designated Iranian entities access the international financial system. The U.S. Treasury also proposed a rule to revoke Banque Misr UAE's correspondent banking access to U.S. financial institutions. In response, Iran's foreign ministry condemned the measures as a 'new wave of economic terrorism,' alleging that the U.S. aims to inflict pain on the Iranian people and deprive them of fundamental human rights, calling it an international crime and a crime against humanity.

Tehran, 28 August 2026 — The United States has announced new sanctions targeting the manager of the Dubai branch of Iran's Bank Melli, as well as a Hong Kong-based company accused of helping designated Iranian individuals and entities access the international financial system.
In a separate measure, the U.S. Treasury Department proposed a rule that would revoke Banque Misr UAE's correspondent banking access to U.S. financial institutions.
Iran's foreign ministry responded on the same day, asserting that the United States is undertaking "a new wave of economic terrorism against Iran." The ministry stated that the move "demonstrates the criminal intent of its planners and implementers to inflict pain and suffering on the Iranian people and deprive Iranian citizens of their fundamental human rights and therefore constitutes an international crime and a crime against humanity."
