Overnight Russian strikes kill 9 in Kyiv region, trigger NATO air defense responses in Poland and Romania

Overnight Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding region killed at least nine people and wounded dozens, according to Ukrainian authorities. The strikes hit residential areas, warehouses, a medical facility, and an educational institution in the capital, with Mayor Vitali Klitschko reporting eight dead and 33 wounded. In the Brovary district, one man was killed and another wounded. The attacks prompted security responses from neighboring NATO members: Poland mobilized aircraft and activated air defenses, while Romania scrambled Spanish fighter jets and a helicopter after a drone entered its airspace and crashed in an unpopulated area. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia would not seriously consider peace until Ukraine has stronger anti-ballistic defenses, emphasizing the continued need for US-made Patriot interceptor missiles. Russia also reported a large Ukrainian drone attack, with Moscow's mayor claiming 250 drones targeted the region, 28 of which were destroyed near the capital. The escalation comes as both sides ramp up long-range strikes in the four-and-a-half-year war.
