TechMeta Platforms (META) will face a major trial on Tuesday in Oakland, California, brought by attorneys general from 29 states alleging the company violated child safety and consumer protection laws. The trial, before District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, involves four states—California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey—as bellwethers. Plaintiffs claim Meta designed psychologically manipulative features like infinite scroll and autoplay to maximize youth engagement, knowing the platforms caused anxiety, depression, and suicide, while misleading users about safety. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri are expected to testify. Meta denies the allegations and opposes potential damages it says could reach $1.4 trillion. The case follows a March 2026 jury finding Meta and YouTube negligent in a related lawsuit, and a New Mexico court ordering Meta to pay $567 million for teen mental health harms.
