TechA federation of nearly 300 French newspapers, APIG, filed a complaint with France's competition authority on Tuesday against Google's new AI-generated summaries of search results, launched in France in late July. The newspapers argue that the AI Overviews, which appear above regular search links and compile information from various sources, erode traffic to their websites and violate a 2022 compensation deal between Google and French media groups. APIG president Marc Feuillee stated that editors seek fair compensation for the use of their content, not to halt innovation. The French competition authority had already fined Google €250 million in 2024 for not fully respecting the 2022 agreement. Separately, the EU announced in December 2025 an investigation into whether Google breached competition rules by using publisher content for AI services without appropriate compensation.
