GAO report: DOGE overstated savings by $34.6 billion on its 'Wall of Receipts'

A Government Accountability Office (GAO) report found that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) significantly overstated its claimed savings on its public 'Wall of Receipts' website. The watchdog determined that roughly $34.6 billion of the $61 billion in claimed contract savings came from contracts that were never actually terminated or could not be verified. DOGE also took credit for terminating 108 leases that were already slated for termination before its creation, overstating lease savings by $81.1 million. Additionally, 96.2% of claimed grant savings could not be verified. The report, requested by Senators Peters and Blumenthal, highlighted that DOGE did not consistently use its stated methodology and failed to account for complexities in federal contracting. The White House did not comment, and DOGE, which formally ended on July 4, did not cooperate with the investigation.
