Denmark launches extended military conscription with first 1,600 recruits

Denmark has launched its extended military conscription program, with around 1,600 recruits beginning an 11-month service period on August 3, 2026. The move is part of a broader defense build-up driven by Arctic security pressures and the war in Ukraine. Denmark announced in 2024 it would extend conscription to include women for the first time and increase standard service time from four to 11 months, with the number of conscripts set to rise to 7,500 annually by 2033. The new intake comes as Denmark prepares to deploy conscripts to Greenland for the first time later this month, a deployment carrying political weight due to U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated attempts to annex the semi-autonomous Danish territory. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated at last month's NATO summit that Denmark was ready to defend every inch of alliance territory. The Danish Armed Forces are also introducing new conscription tracks, including a drone platoon at the Special Operations Command.
