ConflictThe Polish Air Force intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea on August 4, 2026, marking the third such incident within a few days. The aircraft was located 56 kilometers northeast of Koszalin and was escorted by two Polish fighter jets. Polish airspace was not violated. Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that Russia is conducting provocative actions near NATO borders to test the alliance's vigilance. Similar interceptions occurred on Monday and the previous Friday, and in mid-July, Polish jets intercepted Russian fighter jets on three consecutive days. There are growing fears in Poland and the Baltic states that Russia, facing challenges in its war in Ukraine, may increase provocations against NATO members.
