The Trump administration's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) granted autonomous vehicle company Zoox a two-year temporary exemption for commercial deployment of up to 2,500 robotaxis annually in Las Vegas and San Francisco. This follows Zoox's earlier demonstration exemption, making it the first American AV company to receive such approval. The move is part of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy's 'transportation innovation agenda' to deregulate AV standards. NHTSA also announced a partnership with SAE Industry Technologies Consortia to develop a national safety standard and plans to remove mandates for human-driver-specific features like brake pedals and steering wheels. While the exemption drew support from cyclists, disability rights groups, and road safety organizations, it faced opposition from transportation workers' unions.
