Amazon gets $600 mln in Trump tariff refunds, plans to pass some back to customers

Amazon disclosed on its Q2 2026 earnings call that it received $600 million in tariff refunds following the Supreme Court's February ruling that invalidated many of President Donald Trump's tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The company's finance chief, Brian Olsavsky, said Amazon will proactively contact affected customers and automatically issue refunds in limited cases where it can trace that import charges were passed on to shoppers. Otherwise, the refunds will be used to invest in lower prices. Amazon had previously not disclosed whether it would seek refunds, and faced a class action lawsuit from consumers alleging it avoided doing so to curry favor with Trump. The company also faced White House backlash in 2025 over plans to display tariff surcharges on its website. Other major retailers like Apple, Walmart, and Costco also applied for refunds.
