Berlin CSD Association to join Hamburg Pride parade in solidarity after attack

After the attack in Berlin, the Pride movement is coming together. The Berlin CSD association is rolling in with its own truck at the Hamburg parade – participants are asked to dress in a special way.

After the Islamist terrorist attack, the organizers of the Berlin Christopher Street Day (CSD) do not want to be intimidated. The association intends to join the planned CSD parade in Hamburg this Saturday on short notice with its own float.

"Especially now, we must not let ourselves be intimidated," the board announced. "Our answer to hate is solidarity. Our answer to fear is visibility."

With the spontaneous participation in Hamburg, the association is also making it clear that they are not stopping. "There will be a CSD in Berlin again. And this weekend, we are supporting Hamburg Pride."

The truck will be provided to the association free of charge, the Berlin association wrote. Participants are asked to wear dark clothing on the float.

Vigil Planned for the Weekend

A vigil is planned for Sunday (August 2) in Berlin to commemorate the victims. Continuing on Saturday and pausing on Sunday belong together for them, the association wrote on Instagram. "It is important to create space and visibility for both feelings."

In the capital, an attacker drove a car into several people on the sidelines of the CSD and injured others – presumably with a machete. One woman died, 31 people were injured.

Archbishop: Respect Every Person

The Archbishop of Hamburg, Stefan Heße, also spoke out ahead of the Christopher Street Day in Hamburg.

"Christopher Street Day is a visible sign that every person must be respected and honored in their dignity. After the attack on the CSD in Berlin, many people are unsettled. It is all the more important that we do not let ourselves be intimidated by hate and violence," Heße stated.
