Colombia FA proposes Radamel Falcao as assistant coach after retirement

Manchester United have seen plenty of world-class forwards pass through Old Trafford over the years, but not every arrival leaves with the legacy supporters had hoped for.

Some players arrived carrying enormous expectations only to struggle for consistency in England before moving on, despite enjoying outstanding careers elsewhere.

One name that often sparks debate among supporters is Radamel Falcao, whose brief spell in Manchester never reflected the reputation he built across Europe.

While his time at United failed to reach the heights expected, the Colombian striker remains one of the greatest players his country has ever produced.

Now, several years after leaving Old Trafford, Falcao could be preparing for an entirely different chapter in football.

Colombia FA Considering Appointing Former Manchester United Striker

According to El Tiempo, the Colombian Football Federation (FCF) have put forward Falcao's name as a candidate to join the national team's coaching staff once he officially retires from professional football.

The proposal comes after assistant coach Luis Amaranto Perea left to take charge of Independiente Medellin, leaving Colombia searching for both a new assistant coach and a physical trainer.

Argentina's Nestor Lorenzo — whose contract was renewed last week to lead Colombia through the 2028 Copa America, the 2030 World Cup qualifiers, and the 2030 World Cup itself — is said to be open to the idea.

A source close to the national team coach explained:

"Nestor likes the idea that Radamel, should he decide to retire, could join his staff."

However, the same source made it clear the suggestion did not originate from Lorenzo himself:

"Lorenzo was offered Falcao by the Federation; it wasn't his decision. It was the directors who suggested the name."

Despite the growing speculation, Lorenzo and Falcao have not yet held formal discussions regarding the role, his availability, or what responsibilities he would take on if an agreement were eventually reached.

Falcao's Current Status

Falcao recently became a free agent after ending his two-year spell with Colombian side Millonarios, having re-joined them in January of this year.

Although reports have linked him with a possible move to Panama, nothing has materialized, and retirement is now considered the most likely outcome.

Career Overview

Although his loan spell at Manchester United between 2014 and 2015 proved disappointing — producing just 4 goals in 29 appearances under Louis van Gaal — Falcao's overall career remains exceptional.

United ultimately decided against activating their reported £43 million option to buy him permanently, before he spent another difficult loan season with Chelsea.

Away from England, however, El Tigre cemented himself as a Colombian football icon.

Falcao remains Colombia's all-time leading goalscorer with 36 goals in 104 international appearances. Should he accept the Federation's proposal, the legendary striker could soon begin helping shape the next generation of Colombian stars from the sidelines.
