A Steam Deck owner, frustrated by family members borrowing the handheld and leaving it with a dead battery, created an extreme anti-sharing modification. The mod includes a 3D-printed spiky case designed in Blender, and a Raspberry Pi system with a camera, speaker, and servo motor that triggers a taser when someone is detected. The device plays a warning audio clip before delivering a shock. The owner, posting on Reddit as ConroyyJenkinss, says the measures have successfully deterred unauthorized use, though removing the case and disarming the taser for personal use is a hassle. The article highlights the lengths some users go to protect their devices from battery drainers.
Source report
A Steam Deck enthusiast has taken extreme measures to prevent family members from borrowing their handheld console and returning it with a dead battery.
In a post on the Steam Deck subreddit, user ConroyyJenkinss revealed they have modified their device with a series of anti-sharing features, including a 3D-printed spiky case and an integrated taser.
Defensive Design Sacrifices Ergonomics
The augmented Steam Deck, shown in a video embedded in the Reddit post, has effectively abandoned the console's comfortable ergonomics in favor of a defensive design. The device's smooth, hand-filling curves have been replaced by a 3D-printed case modeled by the owner in Blender.
The "chastity belt" case is reportedly detachable, allowing the owner to use the device normally when desired.
Raspberry Pi-Powered Deterrent System
The hostile architecture-inspired case includes additional security features. According to the Redditor:
- A Raspberry Pi with a small speaker
- An object detection camera
- A servo motor
"I wrote a py script so if the camera sees someone in frame, it plays a goofy audio clip, waits a few seconds and then the servo triggers a taser to scare them away," ConroyyJenkinss explained.
This means anyone tempted to touch the spiky handheld receives a warning before potentially being tased.
Results: Mission Accomplished
ConroyyJenkinss reports that the anti-sharing measures have been effective. "Nobody touches my Steam Deck anymore," the DIYer concluded.
In response to questions on the Reddit thread, the owner admitted that removing the case and disarming the taser for personal use is "a hassle but overall worth it." Family members now ask permission before using the portable console.
Context
In recent weeks, Steam Decks have joined the list of desirable devices heavily impacted by the RAMpocalypse. While sharing is generally encouraged, the owner's protective measures against careless battery drainers in the family are understandable.
