Bayern Munich training: Palhinha injured by Kim Min-jae tackle, left shin swollen but continues

Rottach-Egern – The roughly 1,000 Bayern Munich fans gathered at the Birkenmoos stadium held their breath on Wednesday morning. The stars of double-winner coach Vincent Kompany (40) were completing their fourth training session at the team's camp on Lake Tegernsee. With sunshine, 28-degree temperatures, and a festive atmosphere among supporters, conditions were ideal — until half an hour in, when a moment of shock struck.

Incident During Training Match

During an 11-a-side match played on half the field, things turned intense. Defensive star Minjae Kim (29) slid in to block a shot, but in the process, he also took down his teammate João Palhinha (31). The Portuguese midfielder hit the ground and was immediately in pain. Kim went straight over to apologize.

Medical Response

Bayern's medical and physio team rushed to the scene. Team doctor Dr. Jochen Hahne (47) hurried onto the pitch to assess the midfielder's condition. Despite sustaining wounds on his left shin, Palhinha initially continued playing.

However, by halftime, the injury had swollen significantly. Physio Helmut Erhard (54) first cooled the affected area, then applied a tape bandage around Palhinha's left leg, assisted by Dr. Hahne and physio Gerry Hoffmann (65).

Palhinha Plays On

Despite the scare, the loan returnee (who spent last season at Tottenham) pushed through the second half. Palhinha served as the linchpin of his team, which ultimately lost 0-1. The decisive goal was scored by Arijon Ibrahimovic (20), a backup for Harry Kane.

After the session, Palhinha was able to cycle back to the team's new hotel, "Egerner Höfe," on a mountain bike.

Kompany's Intense Coaching Style

The 60-minute session was notably intense — exactly to Kompany's liking. The Belgian coach constantly drove his players forward. Before the Palhinha incident, he had fired up Kim during a defensive drill on an adjacent pitch, where defenders practiced pushing attackers wide.
