SNK opens pre-orders for Neo Geo AES+ retro console at $249

Back in April 2024, SNK announced the Neo Geo AES+ home console, reviving a legend for the modern era. Priced at $250 for the base system with a controller, the console was set for a November 12, 2026 release. As of today, the AES+ is available for pre-order on Amazon, alongside all ten launch titles. These games are recreations of the original cartridges, just as the console itself is a 1:1 revival of the original hardware.

The Legacy of the Neo Geo

The Neo Geo was an icon of its era, bringing arcade gaming to the living room without compromise. At the time, other home consoles relied on cut-down silicon from arcade machines, and their games were heavily compressed to save manufacturing costs. SNK and the Neo Geo took a different approach:

• Game file sizes: 300–700 MB, compared to just 4–16 MB for competitors
• Dedicated audio chips: Zilog and Yamaha processors for high-resolution audio
• Superior graphics: Significantly more power than the Sega Genesis and SNES, which relied on tilemaps. The Neo Geo could scale, shrink, and animate massive, multi-layered 2D character sprites with zero flicker
• Marketing distinction: Advertised as the first 24-bit console on a technicality, though it was essentially a very powerful 16-bit system

Due to its $700 price tag, the Neo Geo was limited to a niche audience of enthusiasts seeking an uncompromising arcade experience. The new AES+ repackages that experience as faithfully as possible, offering much better value, especially when adjusted for inflation.

The Neo Geo AES+ Console

The AES+ looks identical to the original and features a silicon-level recreation of the original architecture using re-engineered ASIC chips—no emulation is involved. Key features include:
