Energie Cottbus signs Bayer Leverkusen defender Luca Erlein on loan until end of season

Energie Cottbus has pulled off a major transfer coup. The second-division promoted side has secured Bundesliga prospect Luca Erlein (19) on loan until the end of the season. The defensive talent had only moved from TSG Hoffenheim to Bayer Leverkusen last week for €2 million.

Cottbus had been searching for defensive reinforcements for some time. With the DFB youth international, they now have a solution that brings considerable pace. Erlein is capable of playing as a right-back, as well as centrally or on the left.

So far, the U19 international has made 31 appearances in the 3. Liga for Hoffenheim's reserve team, recording five assists. The Heidelberg native also made his professional debut in the Europa League. At just 17 years old, Erlein played 13 minutes in the 4–3 away victory against Anderlecht.

International Experience

This summer, Erlein reached the European Championship final with the German U19 team against Spain (0–2), playing the full 90 minutes in every tournament match.

Tactical Plans

Wollitz confirmed the loan deal on the sidelines of the double test match against Dynamo Dresden (2–1, 1–2). He also hinted that he would like to test Erlein as a midfield destroyer.

Cottbus had been searching for a hybrid player capable of filling gaps both as a defensive midfielder and in the back four. With Erlein, the eastern club has found a candidate with an exciting profile who can operate flexibly between the lines.

For the Brandenburg club, the signing also represents recognition of their ability to train and develop top German talent. Wollitz aims to play spectacular, attacking football in the 2. Bundesliga — a philosophy that may prove key to attracting players of this calibre.
