FC Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies became the first World Cup participant to join the team's training camp at Lake Tegernsee on Tuesday morning. The Canadian captain, who was eliminated in the World Cup round of 16 and is recovering from a thigh injury, cycled to a secret training session. Coach Vincent Kompany and sporting director Max Eberl also cycled to the training ground, while sports director Christoph Freund jogged along the lake with fitness chief Walter Gfrerer. Non-World Cup players including Sven Ulreich, Tom Bischof, Arijon Ibrahimovic, Armindo Sieb, and Wisdom Mike also participated. Rottach-Egern – Alphonso Davies (25) became the first FC Bayern World Cup player to arrive at the team's training camp at Tegernsee on Tuesday morning. The Canada captain, whose team was eliminated in the World Cup round of 16 against Morocco (0:3) on July 4, was spotted by BILD cycling to a secret training session at 9:43 a.m. on the second day of the camp.
Davies returned to Munich two weeks ago. The left-back had been undergoing rehabilitation training at Säbener Straße after suffering a muscle bundle tear in his left thigh during the Champions League semi-final exit against PSG, prior to the World Cup in his home country. During the World Cup, he played only 15 minutes in the round of 32 against South Africa (1-0).
Last week, Davies celebrated his wedding with Sheyenne in France at the Château de Saint-Martin-du-Tertre, approximately 50 kilometers north of Paris. On Monday morning, he completed performance tests at the Munich Barmherzige Brüder clinic and at Säbener Straße before arriving at Tegernsee.
Davies Cycles to Training
Davies cycled hands-free as the last member of the player group, wearing light Crocs clogs, headphones, and no helmet, heading to the training ground where he continued his rehabilitation work.
Other non-World Cup players also took mountain bikes to the secret session:
- Sven Ulreich (37)
- Tom Bischof (21)
- Arijon Ibrahimovic (20)
- Armindo Sieb (23)
- Wisdom Mike (17)
Kompany and Eberl Also Cycle
Almost all coaches and staff traveled by bike as well. Head coach Vincent Kompany (40) was the last to depart at 10:18 a.m., cycling the 3.1 kilometers (approximately 10 minutes) to the stadium at Birkenmoos.
Sporting director Max Eberl (52), a Tegernsee resident who lives in Rottach-Egern with his wife Natascha Fruscella, was also seen on a mountain bike.
Freund Jogs Along Tegernsee
Sports director Christoph Freund (49) took a more athletic approach, jogging alongside his Austrian compatriot Walter Gfrerer (53), the fitness chief, at 11:47 a.m. from the training ground back to the team's new hotel, "Egerner Höfe." Assistant coach René Maric (33) had already completed a jog there and back.
Training Camp Schedule
The Bayern squad will remain at Tegernsee for four days. Kompany has scheduled two secret sessions and three public sessions:
- Tuesday: 3:30 p.m. (public)
- Wednesday: 10:00 a.m. (public)
The DFB stars, including Manuel Neuer (40) and Joshua Kimmich (31), as well as other World Cup participants, have not yet joined the camp.
