Berlin CSD attack: 65-year-old Polish woman identified as victim; 3 seriously injured moved from ICU

Berlin's Charité hospital has provided an update on the health condition of those injured in the suspected Islamist attack on the city's Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade. More information has also emerged about the fatality.

Seriously Injured Victims Recovering

Several people were seriously injured on Saturday evening in the attack. Four individuals received intensive care at the Charité, with some undergoing emergency surgery. According to the hospital, they primarily suffered stab wounds, though some also sustained bone fractures.

• Three of the four patients have since been transferred to a regular ward.

Deceased Person Was a Polish Citizen

Poland's government has reacted with dismay and grief to the death of a Polish citizen in the attack. "We extend our sincere condolences to the family and relatives," the Foreign Ministry spokesperson wrote on X.

The Polish consul in Berlin is in contact with German authorities and will provide the family with the necessary consular support. Earlier, Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner announced that the fatality was a 65-year-old Polish national who had been in Berlin with her daughter. (dpa)

CDU Politicians Call for Tougher Stance on Threats

Following the suspected Islamist-motivated attack, CDU security politicians have called for a tougher approach to threats and Islamists.

"The civil liberties of known extremists and Islamists must no longer be overvalued, at the latest when people's lives and limbs are endangered," said Marc Henrichmann, chairman of the Bundestag's intelligence oversight committee, to Handelsblatt.

Key points from Henrichmann's statement:

• The "declaration of war on our liberal democracy" must not be met with "kid gloves."
• In the event of a concrete and significant danger, the protection of the population must have "the highest priority."
• Major events are a focus for Islamist threats.
• "The Prussian spiked helmet must be laid aside. We need to get ahead of the wave."

Henrichmann also called for seamless data exchange between security authorities, better data analysis, and "appropriate data retention." Information about terrorist threats must be evaluated for longer to identify networks.

The Union faction's domestic policy spokesperson, Alexander Throm (CDU), also demanded a tougher course. There must be "no leniency whatsoever" for followers of Islamist ideology, he told the newspaper. This must be reflected in imprisonment, preventive detention, and deportation detention. "The rule must be: in case of doubt, for the safety of the population."

In the attack in Berlin's Tiergarten on Saturday, a woman was killed and 29 other people were injured. The 21-year-old suspect was shot dead during a police operation on Sunday. The Federal Prosecutor's Office is investigating on suspicion of a "presumed Islamist act" and is examining possible accomplices or those with prior knowledge. (afp)

Berlin Mourns

People in the church repeatedly embrace each other, some crying. Many have come in the outfits they wore on Saturday at the CSD. Others come simply dressed in black. Everyone is welcome, as stated in the invitation to the memorial service.

One day after the attack, the service took place at the Protestant St. Mary's Church, not far from the Brandenburg Gate. The Catholic Archdiocese participated, as did representatives of Muslim communities.

Several hundred people followed the invitation and came to the house of worship late Sunday afternoon.
