SDCC Chief Strategy Officer: Iconic Hall H may be eliminated to boost revenue

As San Diego Comic-Con 2026 drew to a close on Sunday, organizers made a startling revelation during the annual "Comic-Con Talkback Panel"—a forum where attendees raise questions and air grievances about the event.

During the session, fans repeatedly raised concerns about access to Hall H, the iconic 7,500-seat auditorium where major studios unveil their biggest announcements. In response, Comic-Con Chief Communication and Strategy Officer David Glanzer made a remark that caught the room's attention.

"In 2010, we outgrew this facility [the San Diego Convention Center]," Glanzer said. "You see that we have outside activations. These are primarily for companies who are inside the building who want to expand their space because we don't have space inside for them to expand."

He continued:

"We turned Hall H [part of the main show floor] into a theatre because the biggest room in this facility is just 4,200 seats. We decided we would forego the revenue from Hall H to create a bigger theatre. Now, we did that some years back and maybe we need to explore getting rid of Hall H and going back to revenue generating, because right now we can only allow X amount of people within the building and can only allow x amount of exhibitors within the building."

Glanzer added that sponsorship revenues tied to signage on hotels and nearby buildings had declined this year, reducing the operating budget needed for improvements such as outdoor Wi-Fi—a measure that could help address the long-standing line management issues plaguing Hall H.

Both Glanzer and Comic-Con Chair Robin Donlan made public appeals for a corporate sponsor to fund the Wi-Fi.

"It's a challenging situation because we don't have enough space, and solving that problem is going to take time, money and effort," Glanzer said. "I promise you that we have people working on all these things and I wish we had the resources to fix every problem, but we just don't. It means we have to be very creative in how we utilize our resources."

A Significant Shift in Tone

Comic-Con is typically guarded and strategic in its communications. Publicly musing about the potential end of Hall H—a signature attraction for both fans and major studios—marks a notable escalation in the convention's efforts to secure greater public support and sponsorship for an event that has been operating beyond capacity for more than a decade.

Future in San Diego Confirmed, Dates Shift for 2028

Despite these challenges, Comic-Con signed an agreement to remain in San Diego through 2030, just before the start of this year's convention. At the talkback forum, Donlan confirmed a rumored shift in dates for 2028 to accommodate the Los Angeles Olympics.

"We took the dates we were offered," she said.
