Energie Cottbus, a promoted team in the 2. Bundesliga, has secured a major transfer by signing 19-year-old defensive talent Luca Erlein on loan from Bayer Leverkusen until the end of the season. Erlein, a German U19 international who recently moved from TSG Hoffenheim to Leverkusen for two million euros, brings versatility to the backline, capable of playing right-back, center-back, or left-back. He has appeared in 31 third-division matches for Hoffenheim's reserve team and made his professional debut in the Europa League at age 17. Cottbus coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz confirmed the deal, noting that Erlein may be tested as a defensive midfielder. The loan is seen as a coup for the eastern club, which aims to play attacking football in the second division.
Source report
Energie Cottbus has pulled off a major transfer coup. The 2. Bundesliga promoted side has secured Bundesliga talent Luca Erlein (19) on loan until the end of the season. The defensive prospect had only moved from TSG Hoffenheim to Bayer Leverkusen last week for €2 million.
Defensive Reinforcement with Versatility
Cottbus had been searching for defensive reinforcements for some time. With the DFB jewel, they now have a solution that brings considerable pace. Erlein is capable of playing as a right-back, as well as centrally or on the left.
The U19 international has made 31 appearances in the 3. Liga for Hoffenheim's reserve team, recording five assists. The Heidelberg native also made his professional debut in the Europa League at just 17 years old, playing 13 minutes in a 4-3 away win against Anderlecht.
High Expectations from Leverkusen
Upon Erlein's transfer from TSG to Leverkusen, Bayer sporting director Simon Rolfes (44) stated:
"Luca Erlein is a highly talented, intelligent, and robust defender. We are very pleased to have completed this transfer."
The substantial contract, running until 2030, underscores the club's ambitions for the player.
International Experience
This summer, the defensive ace reached the European Championship final with the German U19 team against Spain (0-2), playing every tournament match for the full duration.
Coach's Vision
Energie coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz (61) confirmed the loan deal on the sidelines of the double test match against Dynamo Dresden (2-1, 1-2).
"We had an exciting conversation with his parents before the European Championship," Wollitz told Tag24.
Erlein to Be Tested as a Midfield Destroyer
Cottbus had been searching for a hybrid player capable of plugging gaps both as a defensive midfielder and in the back four. With Erlein, the eastern club has found a candidate with an exciting profile who could operate flexibly between the lines.
For the Brandenburgers, the signing also represents an honor — that they are trusted to train and develop a top German talent.
Wollitz wants to play spectacular football in the 2. Bundesliga and not simply sit back. That approach could be the key to attracting players of this caliber.
