The review will focus specifically on the officer's security clearance, according to U.S. President Donald Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, who spoke on Sunday (local time). The announcement follows reports from relatives to the Associated Press that the officer had a history of serious mental health problems and violent behavior.
Homan stated that if the allegations against the ICE officer are true, he does not believe the officer "should ever have passed the security check." He told CNN that "several things are currently being reviewed," including the officer's training and security clearance.
The fatal shooting has brought renewed scrutiny to the procedures of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which, amid Trump's tightened immigration policy, sought to hire thousands of new ICE officers. The Department of Homeland Security initially did not respond to a request for comment regarding the internal review.

Officer Had Mental Health Issues
The Department of Homeland Security stated that Guerrero had attempted to flee the scene in his vehicle. "Out of concern for public safety," the officer used his weapon.
Several close relatives of the officer told the AP that the army veteran had struggled with mental health issues since childhood and should never have been allowed to carry a service weapon or patrol U.S. streets. Democratic members of Congress subsequently demanded information on the training and screening of ICE officers.
