U.S. President Donald Trump stated on July 24, 2026, that Venezuela is not yet ready to hold elections, but acknowledged significant progress under acting President Delcy Rodriguez. This follows the seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by U.S. forces in January 2026, after he was accused of rigging the 2024 presidential election. The U.S. left the government in place without announcing plans for free elections. Last month, the ruling party and opposition met for the first time since signing a deal to hold the 2024 elections. Trump said the U.S. would closely monitor the situation when the country is ready for a vote.
