RWE's Nordseecluster A offshore wind farm has achieved a major milestone by delivering first electricity to the German grid. RWE's Nordseecluster A offshore wind farm has delivered electricity to the German grid for the first time, following the installation of its initial turbine.
The first turbine at the 1.6GW Nordseecluster project, located 50 km north of Juist in the German North Sea, was installed last month.
Electricity produced by Nordseecluster A's turbines will be routed to two offshore substations, where it will be converted to the required transmission voltage before being transported via the grid operator's converter station to the mainland. The project has two separate grid connection points, necessitating two substations.
Nordseecluster A constitutes the first phase of the broader Nordseecluster project. It will ultimately deliver a capacity of 660MW once it is fully linked to the grid, with completion targeted for early 2027.
Construction activity is progressing, with the installation of 44 Vestas wind turbines under way using DEME's installation vessel, the Norse Wind. Testing and commissioning of turbines is being carried out incrementally as installation proceeds.

The initial phase of the project will be followed by Nordseecluster B, which is set to add a further 900MW of capacity. Production of components for this second phase has already begun, with foundation installation scheduled for next year. The installation of 60 additional Vestas turbines is planned for 2028, and commercial operation of Nordseecluster B is expected in early 2029.
The Nordseecluster project is the result of a partnership between RWE, which holds a 51% stake, and Norges Bank Investment Management, with 49%. RWE is overseeing construction and operational management across the project's lifespan.
The combined Nordseecluster wind farms are projected to generate approximately 6.5 TWh of electricity per year.
