Emirates unveils U-Dream headrest for A350 economy class, aiming to replace neck pillows

Business Insider's aviation reporters have flown economy with over two dozen airlines, but Emirates' Airbus A350 has the most impressive coach cabin we've seen by far.

The U-Dream Headrest

The Dubai-based airline unveiled the U-Dream headrest on Monday, and we got to try it out at the UK's Farnborough Airshow. It features two side wings that fold down and inwards, functioning like a neck pillow to support your head.

"Emirates never rests on its laurels when it comes to customer experience and we have found a way to significantly improve the comfort for Economy Class passengers, especially those travelling long-haul," Emirates President Tim Clark said in a press release.

"The U-Dream changes the game if the person wants to sleep — by supporting the neck in full," he added. "No more neck pillows needed."

The headrest also moves vertically and tilts to align with passengers of different heights and body types.

Other Economy Cabin Features

Emirates' A350 economy cabin includes:

• Electronic window shades – the first time these have been installed across all cabins on an Emirates aircraft
• Bluetooth connectivity – allowing passengers to use their own wireless headphones
• 4K screens – which the airline says offer the best image quality of any aircraft
• 3-3-3 seat configuration with 31 to 32 inches of seat pitch

In premium economy and business class, there are dual blinds/shades offering both translucent and blackout options. In coach, only the blackout blind is available.

Rollout Plans

Only three Airbus A350s currently have the new headrests installed, but Emirates plans to equip all 25 A350s by the end of the year. The airline also said it plans to install them on most of its Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 jets, starting from 2027.

Industry Context

As airlines focus on premium offerings like improved business-class suites, it's encouraging to see more investment in economy. Economy passengers may not pay the most, but they make up the majority of the customer base.

"It's another innovation that shows our commitment to customers and cements our Economy Class as the best," Clark said.

Emirates has the advantage of state ownership, backed by Dubai's wealthy government, unlike US airlines. However, United Airlines has also impressed with economy upgrades, including Bluetooth headphone connectivity and a self-serve snack bar on its coming A321XLRs, plus a convertible "Relax Row" bed planned for its Boeing widebodies.

Why It Matters

Emirates' business model relies on a hub-and-spoke route network, transporting passengers from around the world to its hub in Dubai before connecting them to their final destinations. This means long-haul flights are central to the experience.

For travelers spending hours in an economy seat, small upgrades in comfort could be a deciding factor when choosing an airline. While passengers might not want to pay for an upgrade to premium economy or business class, a better coach cabin could make all the difference.
