SportsGerman Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln has officially signed Australian international Paul Okon-Engstler (21) from Sydney FC for a transfer fee of around 1 million euros. The defensive midfielder, who participated in the 2026 World Cup with Australia, signed a contract until 2030. The transfer was delayed due to the player contracting a severe case of flu after the World Cup, which prevented him from completing his medical check. Okon-Engstler is initially planned as a backup for the defensive midfield position. The club is also reportedly pursuing experienced midfielder Ellyes Skhiri (31) from Eintracht Frankfurt as a top target for the same position. Okon-Engstler will travel with the team to their training camp in Kitzbühel, Austria. Sports boss Thomas Kessler praised the player's potential, footballing qualities, and work ethic.
