Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn endured a difficult debut for San Jose Earthquakes, losing 4-0 at home to Orlando City in Major League Soccer's return after the World Cup break. Goals from David Brekalo, Ivan Angulo, Antoine Griezmann (on his debut), and Braian Ojeda sealed the win for Orlando. Gunn, 30, had not played a club game since February and was largely blameless for the goals, making several saves to prevent a heavier loss. Despite the defeat, San Jose remain tied on points at the top of the Western Conference, second on goal difference behind Vancouver Whitecaps. San Jose next host LA Galaxy on Sunday.
Source report
Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn endured a nightmare debut for San Jose Earthquakes as the team suffered a 4-0 defeat at home to Orlando City in their first match following Major League Soccer's break for the World Cup.
The 30-year-old's last appearance came for Scotland in a 3-0 loss to Brazil, which saw his national side fail to qualify for the knockout stages. His most recent club game prior to this was as a substitute in Nottingham Forest's 1-1 Premier League draw with Crystal Palace in February.
Despite the heavy scoreline, Gunn could take little blame for any of the goals and produced several saves that prevented an even more painful defeat for Bruce Arena's side.
Match Summary
- 7th minute: Visiting centre-half David Brekalo headed home unmarked from Eduard Atuesta's free-kick.
- 29th minute: Winger Ivan Angulo doubled Orlando City's lead with a powerful low drive into the far corner from outside the penalty box.
- 48th minute: France legend Antoine Griezmann marked his debut—following his move from Atletico Madrid—by firing home from inside the box after Gunn was left exposed by a loss of possession.
- 73rd minute: Paraguay midfielder Braian Ojeda completed the rout, his header squeezing between Gunn and the near post from another Atuesta set piece.
At the other end, Gunn's opposite number, Canada's Maxime Crepeau, produced several fine saves, including a couple that denied Timo Werner a scoring debut for San Jose after the Germany striker's move from RB Leipzig.
Standings and Next Match
Despite the defeat, San Jose remain tied on points at the top of the Western Conference but sit second on goal difference behind Vancouver Whitecaps, who lost 4-3 away to Cincinnati but have a game in hand. San Jose are fourth in the overall MLS table, with Nashville leading ahead of Argentina forward Lionel Messi's Inter Miami.
Gunn's side next host LA Galaxy, who are ninth in the Western Conference, on Sunday.
