Trump Administration Moves to Rename New York's Penn Station

The Trump administration is taking over the process of renaming New York City's Penn Station, with the Transportation Department announcing that a new name for the iconic transportation hub is a top priority.

According to a report from the New York Daily News on Thursday, Transportation Secretary Sean McDuffy sent a letter to multiple Senate committees outlining his department's decision to "direct Amtrak to rename New York Penn Station."

While the new name has not been confirmed, McDuffy suggested last August that "Trump Station" had "a nice ring to it." Three months before that, Gothamist obtained redesign renderings of the station featuring Trump's name and gold flourishes throughout.

President Trump has long sought to see his name on as many stations and landmarks as possible. In February, he held infrastructure funding for New York hostage unless Democrats agreed to rename Penn Station and Washington, D.C.'s Dulles International Airport after him. The "Trump-Kennedy Center" saga ended with his name being removed from that cultural institution. Earlier this month, Florida's Palm Beach International Airport was renamed after him.

Salmonella Outbreak Prompts Egg Recall

Americans are now facing a salmonella outbreak affecting eggs, adding to a growing list of food safety concerns.

Midwest Poultry Services is recalling close to 1.6 million white shell eggs and brown cage-free shell eggs produced in Texas, the Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday. The eggs have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella enteritidis and were sold at Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana, as well as Brookshire Grocery stores in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, and New Mexico.

The company has stopped distributing eggs produced on its Texas farms, according to the FDA. Salmonella enteritidis is a bacterium that can survive on the shell of an egg or inside it, potentially causing symptoms including cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, chills, fever, and headaches.

Ongoing Food Safety Crises

The salmonella scare follows an explosive diarrhea outbreak linked to tainted lettuce from Taylor Farms. That produce contained cyclospora, a one-celled parasite, and has affected at least 41 states with over 12,000 possible cases.

Additionally, the New World screwworm—a flesh-eating parasite—has infested cattle in Texas and spread to other states, causing an estimated $1 billion in damages.

The Trump administration has cut numerous programs that previously helped prevent such outbreaks. Elon Musk's DOGE eliminated a monitoring program for the screwworm and gutted the CDC team responsible for responding to cyclospora outbreaks.
