FinanceAdvanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced a major deal to sell Anthropic tens of billions of dollars' worth of AI servers and invest up to $5 billion in the startup. The deal, reported by Reuters on July 22, 2026, is part of a trend of 'circular deals' where chipmakers invest in AI firms that are major customers. Anthropic will purchase up to two gigawatts of AMD's latest Instinct MI450 chips starting in the first half of 2027. The investment is tied to deployment milestones. This strengthens AMD's position as the number-two AI chipmaker behind Nvidia, which has been in talks to invest $30 billion in OpenAI. Anthropic, maker of the Claude AI model, needs computing capacity and has also agreed to rent capacity from SpaceX and is in talks with Meta. AMD shares rose 2.4% on the news.
