Maersk to open $100M fulfillment hub in Massachusetts

• Maersk is set to open a 617,000-square-foot fulfillment hub near Boston to serve a single large-scale e-commerce customer, according to a July 15 press release. Maersk did not disclose the name of the customer.
• The $100 million facility in Hopedale, Massachusetts, slated to open in August, can process up to 330,000 units per day at peak capacity, per the release.
• The fulfillment hub is equipped with conveyor and sortation technology, which was co-designed with the customer based on their needs, a Maersk spokesperson told Supply Chain Dive.

Maersk's upcoming Massachusetts center supports the carrier's strategy to build an integrated logistics solution for its customers by connecting transportation, warehousing, and fulfillment and distribution operations.

The hub will support high-volume fulfillment and delivery operations across the Northeast with speed, reliability, and scalability during peak demand, per the release.

"Our investment in Hopedale reflects continued customer demand for modern fulfillment capabilities and reinforces Maersk's commitment to building resilient, scalable supply chains across North America," Dave Hune, head of Maersk contract logistics North America, said in the release.

Maersk has been expanding its end-to-end logistics network by adding multiple warehouses and ground operations, stepping outside its ocean freight services for quite some time. The company's partnerships and M&A deals have been focused on omnichannel fulfillment and e-commerce capabilities.

Maersk Fulfillment Hubs in North America

Maersk operates several fulfillment facilities in North America, including in the following regions:

• Greater Los Angeles and Inland Empire
• Savannah, Georgia
• Miami
• Chicago region

Last year, Maersk also opened a 385,000-square-foot facility in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
