Australia successfully tested a hybrid medium-range air defense system, dubbed a 'Frankenstein' system, in June 2026. The test, conducted at the Woomera test range during Exercise Taipan Strike 2026, involved firing an SM-2 interceptor missile from a Derringer trailer-mounted launcher. The system integrated a virtualized Lockheed Martin Aegis combat system and a phased-array radar from Australian firm CEA Technologies. The test aimed to provide a cost-effective alternative to expensive Patriot-type systems by leveraging existing Australian inventory, including SM-2 and potentially SM-6 missiles.
