SportsGerman Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln has finalized the transfer of Australian defensive midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler (21) from Sydney FC for a fee of approximately 1 million euros. The 21-year-old, who was born in Belgium and participated in the World Cup, is initially planned as a backup for the defensive midfield position. The transfer was delayed because Okon-Engstler could not complete his medical test due to the flu, but he is now scheduled to undergo the check on Thursday and will join the team's training camp in Kitzbühel, Austria on Friday. This is Köln's second World Cup participant signing after Ghanaian Gideon Mensah. The club is still searching for a top defensive midfielder, with Ellyes Skhiri (31, Frankfurt) remaining a candidate, while a move for Mexican World Cup star Edson Álvarez (28) appears too expensive. Köln is also looking for an alternative to center forward Ragnar Ache.
