FinanceMicrosoft and French AI startup Mistral announced an expanded strategic partnership on July 21, 2026, with Microsoft committing billions to fund Mistral's European data center expansion using NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs. Two Mistral models, Medium 3.5 and OCR 4, were added to Microsoft Foundry, and Medium 3.5 is now available in Copilot Studio. The deal aims to give enterprises, especially in regulated industries like financial services, manufacturing, and healthcare, greater control over AI deployment, including fully disconnected configurations via Azure Local. Microsoft Vice Chair Brad Smith and Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch stated the partnership combines American and European technology. No new equity investment was made, though Mistral is reportedly seeking €3 billion at a €20 billion valuation. The agreement is part of Microsoft's European Digital Commitments and includes joint go-to-market efforts, proof-of-concept funding, and workshops.
