The Spanish football club Deportivo has officially changed its name from Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña S.A.D. to Real Club Deportivo de A Coruña S.A.D., as confirmed by the Official Gazette of the Commercial Registry. The change, approved by an extraordinary shareholders' meeting on June 23, adapts the club's name to the city's official toponym, A Coruña. Nearly 80% of surveyed fans supported the move. The new name has already been displayed on the club's crest, jerseys by Nike, and facilities since St. John's Eve. This initiative is part of the club's 120th anniversary celebrations in 2026, which also include a new official anthem by local artist Xoel López.
Source report
Almost a month after the initial approval on June 23, Deportivo has received definitive confirmation from the Official Gazette of the Commercial Registry regarding the modification of its company bylaws. This final administrative step formalizes the club's name change to align with the city's place name.
Shareholder Approval
The extraordinary shareholders' meeting held last month confirmed the will of the fans. Nearly 80% of subscribers who participated in the survey on adapting the club's name to the place name of A Coruña expressed their agreement with the change.
The meeting approved the modification of Article 1 of the bylaws, concerning the corporate name. The club will now be registered as Real Club Deportivo de A Coruña S.A.D., replacing the previous Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña S.A.D.
Place Name Adaptation
This completes, for all purposes, a process in which Deportivo supporters and platforms such as Aquí tamén se fala mobilized to demand the adaptation of the club's name to the local place name.
According to the club's survey, the official name will be:
- Spanish: Real Club Deportivo de A Coruña
- Galician: Real Club Deportivo da Coruña
New Crest and Branding
Since St. John's Eve, when the new crest was presented with minor adjustments and the official name "A Coruña" at the bottom, the club has already been using its new name. It now appears on:
- All club emblems
- The new jerseys produced by American firm Nike
- Iconography at the Abegondo sports complex facilities
120th Anniversary Celebrations
The place name change and the new crest are two of several initiatives planned by the entity for its 120th anniversary, being celebrated throughout 2026. Also in progress is the composition of a new official anthem, handled by A Coruña-born artist Xoel López.
