DB security employee pushed from moving train, union demands legal action

GDL chief Mario Reiß told WDR on Saturday that there is no need for a security summit or round table, but rather "decisions from the judiciary."

"We need changes in the law and we need the right of direct intervention," Reiß said.

He added: "Everyone in Germany must become aware that an attack on a person will be punished and will have consequences that deter people from attacking someone."

Reiß described the escalation level on the train as "immense" and noted that colleagues "have to go to work with more fear every day."

The Incident

A 26-year-old employee of DB Security fell from a moving train on the railway line from Offenburg to Karlsruhe on Friday evening and was seriously injured. The incident followed a scuffle with a passenger during a ticket inspection.

The security employee was attacked with punches and kicks by a 36-year-old man who had previous convictions for violent offenses. The suspect, now under investigation for bodily harm, has been released.

Suspect's Background and Legal Status

The 36-year-old was reportedly out on probation at the time of the incident. The public prosecutor's office applied for an arrest warrant against him in the afternoon, but the district court refused to order pre-trial detention despite the ongoing probation sentence. No official reason was initially given for this decision.

The suspect had previously appeared in criminal proceedings for violent offenses, according to the public prosecutor's office. He is believed to have been drunk during the incident on the route to Karlsruhe.

Victim's Condition

The victim of the attack is in a stable but still critical condition. Authorities stated he is not yet out of the woods.
