Saronic selects Brownsville, Texas for $3B autonomous vessel shipyard

Saronic, a defense technology company, has selected Brownsville, Texas, as the site for its $3 billion 'Port Alpha' shipyard, designed to build autonomous naval vessels. The facility, located at the Port of Brownsville, aims to restore U.S. shipbuilding capacity and is expected to create up to 10,000 direct jobs. Construction is set to begin in 2026, with operations starting in 2028. The project aligns with federal initiatives like the SHIPS for America Act and the Maritime Action Plan, which seek to rebuild the American shipbuilding industry. Port Alpha will initially span 835 acres with potential expansion to 4,400 acres, capable of producing vessels up to 850 feet long. The project is projected to generate over $160 billion in regional economic impact for Cameron County and $264.5 billion for Texas.
