Deportivo signs 20-year-old Danish midfielder Jonathan Asp Jensen from Bayern Munich

Deportivo announced this Monday the signing of Danish footballer Jonathan Asp Jensen. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder arrives from Bayern Munich, where he made his Bundesliga debut two years ago under Thomas Tuchel. Despite attracting interest from other European clubs, the player will wear the blue-and-white shirt next season.

The club continues its commitment to scouting young players with potential and revaluation capacity, reaffirming its broad vision. In recent transfer windows, Deportivo has made clear its intention to look beyond Spain for reinforcements. This strategy began with moves such as those of Zakaria Eddahchouri, Nemanja Tosic, and Denis Genreau in January 2025, and the club has not stopped looking abroad since. Asp Jensen, however, joins a very select list of Nordic players who have defended Deportivo's colors.

Deportivo's Nordic Players

The Nordic market—players born in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, or Iceland—has not been Deportivo's usual hunting ground. This has held true both in recent markets, when the club reopened to foreign players, and since the Bosman Law began internationalizing player transfers. So far this century, only four players with Nordic passports have worn the club's shirt.

Christian Wilhelmsson (Sweden)

The Swedish attacker arrived at Deportivo in January 2008 with the mission of reinforcing a team at serious risk of relegation to the Second Division. He landed in A Coruña on loan from Bolton after a career that included stints at Nantes and Roma.

As a blue-and-white player, he became the talisman of the team's salvation under manager Miguel Ángel Lotina. He contributed one goal and two assists in fifteen matches, but his impact on the game helped breathe life into a team that went from fighting relegation to qualifying for the UEFA Cup via the Intertoto Cup. At the end of the season, with the objective achieved, he returned to England. He continued his career in France, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and retired in Sweden.

Knut Olav Rindaroy (Norway)

A couple of years later, in 2010, another Nordic footballer arrived at Deportivo, this time from a neighboring country. Knut Olav Rindaroy reinforced Lotina's left flank that summer. He arrived on loan from Norwegian club Molde after having made his debut for his country's senior national team.

However, he failed to leave a mark during his time in A Coruña. He barely participated in four matches, with 400 minutes spread across six league and cup games. He could not take the starting spot in the league from Morel or Manuel Pablo. In 2011, after relegation to the Second Division, he returned to Molde, where he completed the rest of his career.

Michael Krohn-Dehli (Denmark)

Asp Jensen follows in the footsteps of the last Dane at Deportivo, set a few years ago by Michael Krohn-Dehli. The midfielder arrived in A Coruña in the winter of 2018 to reinforce Cristóbal Parralo's squad, who would later be managed by Clarence Seedorf. Despite his past at Celta, he came from Sevilla to try to salvage a calamitous season. He could not prevent relegation to the Second Division, but he stayed with the club in the silver category. He was one of the heavyweights in the midfield of Natxo González and José Luis Martí during the 2018-19 season, which ended with a frustrated promotion in Mallorca. He hung up his boots after that bitter experience at Son Moix.

Max Svensson (Sweden)

The last player with Nordic nationality was actually born in Barcelona. Max Svensson completed Deportivo's forward line in the 2022-23 season in Primera RFEF. Although he is from Catalonia, he holds dual Swedish nationality. His father, Tomas, was an international handball goalkeeper who played for Barça and was a two-time world champion. Currently, Svensson has a contract with Casa Pía in the Portuguese first division.
