Deportivo sign Danish midfielder Jonathan Asp Jensen from Bayern Munich

Deportivo have officially announced the signing of 20-year-old Danish attacking midfielder Jonathan Asp Jensen. The blue-and-white club confirmed the transfer on Monday, with the player arriving from Bayern Munich on a permanent five-season contract, running until 2031.

Born in Gauerslund, Asp Jensen has impressed in recent seasons with Bayern Munich's reserve team. Last season, he was a key figure for Grasshopper in the Swiss Super League.

A Project Attracting Young Talent

Deportivo's return to the First Division has proven appealing to emerging players. This was evident in the signing of Leo Román after paying his release clause to Mallorca, and now in the Asp Jensen operation. The Danish player received offers from Italian clubs, but ultimately chose A Coruña after leaving Bavaria.

He joins a list of signings that blend young talent with potential for growth and revaluation during their time at the club—a philosophy also reflected in the acquisitions of Dutch midfielder Teun Gijselhart and Polish defender Bright Ede.

Asp Jensen's Career Path

Asp Jensen trained in the youth system of Midtjylland in his native Denmark. With the Danish side, he played in the Youth League in 2022 at just 16 years old. His performances attracted the attention of Bayern Munich's academy.

He moved from Herning to Munich to join the Bavarian club's youth ranks. In the reserve team, he played alongside Aleksandar Pavlovic, now in Bayern's first team and the German national squad. At the end of the 2023–24 season, Asp Jensen made a brief Bundesliga appearance—one minute under Thomas Tuchel against Wolfsburg.

After starting last season's preseason under Vincent Kompany, he was loaned to Grasshopper Club Zurich, where he became one of the standout players. He earned a starting role in the attacking midfield line, capable of playing centrally or attacking from the flanks. Across all competitions, he played 39 matches, scoring 9 goals and providing 6 assists. His performances were crucial in helping Grasshopper secure survival via the playoff. He has also represented Denmark at youth levels up to U18.

Fit in Deportivo's Plans

Deportivo represents Asp Jensen's first adventure outside Bayern's academy. He developed significantly at Grasshopper, but at Deportivo he will seek a leap in quality and demands, requiring a proper integration into Antonio Hidalgo's system. His versatility in the attacking midfield line makes him a valuable asset for the Canovelles coach.

However, he arrives at a position already occupied by Mario Soriano or Luismi Cruz. With a crowded midfield and potential departures still pending, the Dane will need to find his place and prove his talent to earn a preferential role in Deportivo's setup. He can also be deployed on the wing, often drifting to the left—a flank already held by Yeremay Hernández. The club also intends for David Mella to compete for a spot on the left flank once he recovers from injury, after three seasons on the right.

While both players continue their respective preparations away from the group, Asp Jensen has the opportunity to demonstrate his abilities and earn the trust of Antonio Hidalgo. The weeks of training ahead in Abegondo, along with friendlies such as this Saturday's match (8:00 PM) against Compostela at the Vero Boquete in San Lázaro, will help him acclimatise to the team and to a league where he must step up and confirm himself as one of the gems from the Bayern Munich academy.
